Book: The Embodied Advocate
To embody something means to represent it in human form. The Embodied Advocate is a book and training program designed to help advocates give human form to their compassion for clients. Because we know the advocate is inseparable from the intervention or program, the advocate must be healthy and whole in order to do this work. But this is not your average run-of-the-mill self-care book. In fact, we know a great deal about the traits a professional must posses to provide quality services to clients: empathy, compassion, and genuineness.
The aim of the book is to help you embody those traits. Most training programs focus on the mastery of a model, program, theory, or skill, but not enough training programs focus on the development of the advocate, themselves. And that’s why this program is designed as a restoration process for advocates. Sometimes advocates have some lessons to unlearn to become the effective advocate they want to be. Sometimes, we have some wounds to heal, some of those wounds are from way back in childhood. We have biases to heal and assumptions to correct. The Embodied Advocate is a program designed to help victim and survivor advocates bring a healthier version of themselves to their work so that they may better serve their clients. We don't just help people develop skills, we develop advocates.
